This question is rather hard to answer, as data concerning disability or chronic illness are not collected and/or evaluated when a student is applying for university or higher education. The Austrian “Sozialerhebung 2002” includes an extra part in order to assess the extent of students with disabilities in HE. The students have to answer questions in a self-assessment form.

They have to evaluate whether they are themselves affected by disability, chronic illness or any health impairment. The findings are that 11,9% of all students are affected by a health impairment. 1% of all students in Austria characterise themselves as disabled, 7,6% call themselves chronically ill and 3,3 % say that they have other health impairments.

In Austria there are 616 students with disabilities. The percentage of blind and partially sighted students is 14.4% - that means that in Austria there are about 88 blind and partially sighted students.
